  • When Should You Clean Your DPF?

Most diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems include a self-cleaning process that automatically regenerates the filter during operation. To enable this process, your truck must be driven regularly on the highway for 2-3 hours. If the Motor Control Module (MCM) or Aftertreatment Control Module (ACM) detects the need for cleaning, an active regeneration will occur. If irregularities are detected, a check engine light or MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) will activate, signaling the need for professional diagnostics at an experienced shop.

  • How Long Does DPF Cleaning Take?

An active or stationary regeneration typically takes 40-60 minutes. If you notice prolonged regen times or if the check engine light persists, your truck should be scheduled for diagnostics and service. OEM guidelines recommend removing and cleaning DPF filters at approximately 400,000 miles. This more thorough cleaning process can take 1-2 days and requires specialized equipment to reset system settings and restore the truck to OEM standards.
